Who we are

The Max Mannheimer Study Center is an extra-school educational institution that aims to enable, first and foremost, young people from throughout the world to take a more in-depth look at contemporary history. The educational services include single or multiple study day courses for school classes, youth association groups, students, and other interested groups.

The focus is on the Nazi period in general particular the history of the Dachau concentration camp in particular. Debates on specific topics currently taking place in areas like anti-discrimination education are also integrated into the program. The structuring of a program is coordinated to fit the wishes and qualifications of the group. Particular attention is paid to the individual interests, the social context, and the preexisting knowledge of the groups.

As an extra-school educational institution we enable learning in a non-stressful atmosphere and without the pressure to perform and achieve high grades. The educational concept is based on the interests of the participants and follows the principle of giving them the opportunity to take as much individual initiative as possible. Based on close cooperation with those responsible for the group, the contents of a program are therefore always tailored to meet the specific needs and, moreover, are carried out with a clear orientation on the process under the guidance of competent education staff.

The study center is named after Max Mannheimer, a survivor of the Auschwitz and Dachau concentration camps. The body responsible for the Center is a foundation, the Stiftung Jugendgästehaus Dachau, which itself is financed by the Free State of Bavaria, the City of Dachau, and Dachau County.

Volunteers – Voluntary Services in the field of culture and education

Seit 2011 gehört das FSJ-Kultur zum Max Mannheimer Studienzentrum. Jedes Jahr unterstützen uns zwei junge Menschen bei der Vorbereitung und Durchführung von Studienprogrammen und Veranstaltungen.

The Team

Around 25 highly-motivated teamers – as we like to call them – of very different ages carry out our study programs at the Max Mannheimer Study Center. All of them have completed a training course for guides at the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site, followed by another training course specific for our work at the Center. Regular further training programs and excursions are also an integral part of the work at the Max Mannheimer Study Center.
